Performance Comparison of DEWALT DCD771C2

This drill ranked just behind the Milwaukee M18 and ahead of the Porter-Cable PCCK607LB. The DeWalt DCD771C2 falls in the middle in terms of list prices between these two drills, but it performed the worst in our battery life tests compared to this group.

However, it excels at driving screws among this trio and performs better than the Porter-Cable when drilling. The M18 did slightly better than both in our more challenging drilling tests.

Drilling Performance of DEWALT DCD771C2

The DCD771C2 performed well in our drilling performance test, which accounts for 35% of its total score. It received solid approval for its ability to drill into a solid core door with a 5″ hole saw, drill through steel sheets with twist drills, and bore through dimensional lumber with a 1″ paddle bit.

With the 5″ hole saw, the DCD771C2 did fairly well, reaching the full depth of the saw smoothly without any issues. Although it took about three times longer than the top drills to reach this depth, it was still under a minute.

dewalt_dcd771c2_drilling_performance

Next, using the 1″ paddle bit, the DCD771C2 performed exceptionally. It could drill through the 2×12 in its higher gear most of the time, only needing to downshift when encountering a knot or other tough spot.

It offers good control, although we noticed it had slightly less power than the best drills, although this difference was barely noticeable.

Finally, when drilling through steel sheets, the DCD771C2 delivered a solid performance. The drill never struggled or stalled, but it did take a bit longer to get through.

It took 2.4 seconds to penetrate the 16 gauge sheet metal with the ¼” drill and 7-9 seconds with the ½” drill. However, it did bind up a bit with the ½” drill just as it broke through, requiring us to switch to the lower gear.

Driving Performance of DEWALT DCD771C2

Next, we assessed and scored the DCD771C2 based on its driving power when setting screws, which also contributes to 35% of its final score. The DCD771C2 achieved an excellent score, especially for its performance in driving both a countersunk #9 wood screws and a 5″ long, ½” diameter lag screw.

This cordless drill excels at driving normal wood screws. It sets the screws quickly with plenty of power and effortlessly sinks the screw heads flush. The DeWalt DCD771C2 provides excellent control, allowing you to adjust the screw head to the perfect depth.

Battery Life of DEWALT DCD771C2

Our third evaluation focused on the battery life of each drill and the time it takes to recharge. Unfortunately, the DCD771C2 didn’t perform as well in these tests.

Together, these three assessments account for 20% of the final score for this drill. We tested this model with a 1.3 Ah battery included in the package we purchased.

To compare and evaluate the battery life of each tool head-to-head, we used each drill to drive in 16 normal wood screws and then drill three holes with the 1″ paddle bit, repeating this until the drill’s battery died. Points were awarded based on the total number of cycles completed.

dewalt_dcd771c2_battery_life

The DCD771C2, with its 1.3 Ah battery, only managed to complete four full cycles before dying after driving in the first two screws of the fifth cycle. In comparison, the best drills completed over ten cycles, most of which had a 1.5 Ah or 2 Ah battery.

However, the DCD771C2 did somewhat redeem itself by including two batteries, allowing you to always have one on the charger while you work. Additionally, it charges faster than average, taking less than an hour (58 minutes) for the included charger to fully recharge a dead battery.

Convenience of DEWALT DCD771C2

For the final 10% of the overall score for each cordless drill, we awarded points based on all the small features and functions that make these tools easier and more productive to use. After all, a good tool should make tasks easier rather than more difficult. The DCD771C2 performed well in our tests.

Swapping batteries on this drill is super easy, thanks to an easy-to-release locking button, and the battery slides in and out effortlessly.

However, this drill lacks a battery meter, so you don’t have a concrete way of knowing how much battery life remains. The DCD771C2 weighs about the average for these products—just under 3.5 lbs with the battery installed.

It offers two different gear ratios, with rpm ranges of 0-450 or 0-1800. The chuck can expand up to ½”, but we were disappointed that this drill does not come with a belt clip, although one can be added if purchased separately.

The DCD771C2 also features a built-in work light above the trigger. It provides decent illumination of your work area and stays on for about 20 seconds after you release the trigger—a feature we found incredibly useful in a DIY tool.

How Good is DEWALT DCD771C2?

I bought the DEWALT 20V Max Cordless Drill/Driver Kit (DCD771C2) for handling various DIY projects around my home, and it has surpassed my expectations. Right from the unboxing, I was impressed by the drill’s compact and lightweight design. It feels comfortable in hand, making it easy to work in tight spaces for long periods.

The high-speed transmission with 2-speed variations is fantastic, allowing for a broad range of drilling and driving tasks. Whether it’s putting together furniture, hanging pictures, or tackling more heavy-duty drilling, this drill has the power to handle it efficiently. The battery life is impressive, providing ample runtime to finish my projects without needing constant recharging.

One standout feature is the 1/2-inch single-sleeve ratcheting chuck that grips bits tightly, ensuring they stay in place during high torque applications. This feature has saved me from the frustration of bits slipping out while working.

Now, onto a minor drawback. The kit could benefit from including a better selection of bits. The basic ones provided are fine to get started, but for more diverse tasks, you’ll need to invest in additional bits. However, this is a minor issue considering the drill’s performance and affordability.

Overall, the DEWALT DCD771C2 is an excellent choice for both DIY enthusiasts and professionals on a budget.

Its performance, ease of use, and the reliability associated with the DEWALT brand make it a value-for-money investment for a wide range of drilling and driving needs. I highly recommend this Cordless Drill/Driver Kit to anyone looking for a powerful, reliable, and budget-friendly addition to their toolkit.

How Powerful DEWALT DCD771C2 is?

This drill is fantastic! The speed and power exceed any of the drills I’ve owned before; it performs like a beast. It comes with two battery packs, which are essential, and the carry case is perfect for transporting it.

Everything on the drill operates smoothly and clicks together easily. It grips the drill bits securely and doesn’t give me any issues. This drill inspires me to take on more projects around my house and for my family.

Will DEWALT DCD771C2 Last Longer?

I purchased three drills and will list the pros and cons of each:

Random Name Brand (Item B07VFCR85S):

  • Pros: Feels good in the hand with good controls and a balanced feel, similar to a DeWalt. Very lightweight. Comes with 2 batteries, some cheap bits, and a hard case. Batteries last a long time even after hours of usage. Includes a battery indicator light.
  • Cons: Has a 3/8 chuck, so it can’t use big 1/2 inch drill bits.

DeWalt DCD771C2 (Item B00ET5VMTU):

  • Pros: Good ergonomic design. Comes with 2 batteries.
  • Cons: The bag is decent but not included; you need to buy it separately. Noisy motor clicks after releasing the trigger. Would have been nice to have a hard case included.

Worx WX102L (Item B08XSJ6B13):

  • Pros: Comes with 1 battery.
  • Cons: Very cheap carry bag. Poorly thought-out design with the drill feeling unbalanced due to the shorter back end, causing it to droop forward when picked up. Awkward battery release button placement at the back. Speed controls are not in the same position as other drills. Controls are not fine; slight trigger pressure sends a lot of power, and the drill continues spinning after releasing the trigger. Overall awkward to use.

Note:

Sparks are normal for non-brushless motors; brushless motors don’t spark and tend to last longer.

Based on my experience, I will be returning the Worx drill due to its design and usability issues. Hence, I recommend DEWALT DCD771C2 as the best drill which will last longer than the other two.

Will DEWALT DCD771C2 Get the Job Done?

This $99 DEWALT drill definitely has what it takes. However, it does make you wonder, “Is this truly a genuine DEWALT tool?”

While it’s true that you get what you pay for, this device is surprisingly affordable for a DEWALT. That said, I had to consider a few things.

This 20V power tool comes with (2) 20V batteries and a charger. The catch is, I don’t really need the batteries or charger since they are identical to BLACK AND DECKER’S 20V power source, of which I have plenty thanks to previous purchases.

This raises the question, “Am I paying more for the batteries/charger than I am for the basic drill?” Such thoughts are fueled by Amazon’s dazzling array of similar drills selling for $60 or less. Decisions, decisions! This DEWALT is made in Mexico, and for some reason, I see that as a step up from Chinese merchandise. BUT WAIT!

For about $60, Amazon sells comparable (albeit no-name) brands that offer a “Brushless Motor”. Forget that Mr. Tesla invented the Brushless Motor…it’s all about, “WHERE’S THE BEEF?” Now, here’s where seeing is believing. Out of the box, try revving up this $99 DEWALT! Ah, the light show of sparks and the smell of crackling ozone. Let’s face it, ‘Brushless’ electric motors are superior.

So, let’s size this all up: This inexpensive DEWALT drill will get the job done. Certainly, if you’re not already invested in wireless 20V LITHIUM ION tools, this twin-battery set is a good option. If you are invested, you might have some doubts. Plus, considering this DEWALT system is not particularly light, there are others to consider.

Bottom Line:

I’m too busy these days to return this perfectly acceptable $99 tool, which includes a lightweight DEWALT bag, batteries, and charger. FINAL THOUGHT: If you have an immediate need for a good “SEMI-PRO” tool, you can’t go wrong with this DEWALT.

Is it True That the DEWALT DCD771C2 Has Great Torque?

Make this your first and last drill. This kit includes a great drill, charger, battery, and bag. I bought it as a gift after getting the drill for myself a couple of years ago.

I was amazed by the torque this drill has! Once, when drilling 1″ holes in 2x4s, the bit caught, and I thought the drill was going to break my arm with all that torque!

There hasn’t been a job I needed to do that this drill couldn’t handle. So, when I saw a drill on the recipient’s gift list, I knew exactly which one I planned to get. Since then, I’ve expanded my lineup, and the 20V batteries are interchangeable among many tools.

We needed a new drill, and this one is excellent. What’s even better is that Dewalt is American-made! That was a big selling point for me. Dewalt drills and products have a reputation for being high-quality tools suitable for any use.

Whether you’re looking for your first tool or replacing a broken one, this is the drill you should get!

Does DEWALT DCD771C2 Have Long Lasting Battery Packs?

I purchased this drill after experiencing a bit of getting stuck in a wall with my old 7-volt drill, realizing I needed something more powerful. I also liked having a second battery pack because my old drill had its battery inside with no light to indicate when it was done charging.

This drill completely solved the problem of bits getting stuck, and each battery pack lasted so long that I didn’t even need to switch it out while installing hardware for five sets of blinds and hinges for two doors (one inside, one outside).

Just so you know, drill bits are not included, but I was able to purchase a set from the same brand at my local Home Improvement store for a reasonable price.

The light on the drill automatically turns on when you start drilling, regardless of whether it’s dark, and it stays on for a while afterward. I couldn’t find a way to disable it, but I suppose it doesn’t hurt anything.

Also, there are two red lights side by side on the charger. I mistakenly charged a battery pack longer than necessary, expecting both lights to turn on when charging finished.

The actual indicator is that one blinking light will stay on steadily, and both lights will only turn on if there is a delay in the charging process. This information is displayed on the front of the charger, so it was just my failure to observe it properly.

I am very happy to have upgraded to this drill. I’ve made numerous trips to the home improvement store this year and observed that the brand is reputable. The quality and performance while in my hands have supported that impression.

What Other Drill Should You Consider?

If Dewalt is your preferred tool brand, or if you come across a good sale (which happens frequently), the DCD771C2 is a solid choice. While the battery life is a bit low, swapping batteries is easy enough, especially if you already own other Dewalt tools and have spare batteries on hand.

If you need something smaller for tight spaces and smaller locations, consider the DeWalt Atomic 20V Max Brushless Compact 1/2 In. Drill/Driver Kit DCD708C2. It offers better battery life and similar performance during testing.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for the best overall performer and brand isn’t a concern, consider the Milwaukee M18 Fuel 1/2″ Drill Driver. It has superior driving ability and longer battery life compared to the DCD771C2 and similar models.

Our Verdict

Although the DeWalt 20V Max Compact Drill/Driver Kit DCD771C2 performed well in our screw driving tests, it didn’t receive an award. While its drilling performance was good, it didn’t quite match the top drills, and its battery life was disappointing.

The drill is reasonably convenient to use, with many helpful features, but it comes with a higher list price.

Overall, this brushed drill should satisfy most users, but we would typically recommend another model unless this one is on sale at a discount or under special circumstances.

The DCD771C2 is another impressive drill that gets the job done, even though it doesn’t quite match the overall performance of the top tools. We discovered that it provides exceptional control and power when driving screws, although we wish it had a slightly longer battery life.

This drill can handle nearly every task you throw at it, although it might take a bit longer than the top-tier tools. While it’s not the best value at its list price, we found it offered at significant discounts during sales, making it a much more attractive bargain buy.
